How to Apply
Applications for 2025 will open mid-October 2024. They are made online through the Department for Education’s DfE Apply Service. We look for applicants who have the talent, commitment and enthusiasm to become effective Secondary teachers.
Before you apply
We want you to be happy that you have made a fully informed decision about applying to train to teach. Getting some classroom experience can help you to decide whether teaching is right for you and could also strengthen your application. However, applicants will not be disadvantaged if they are unable to gain school experience prior to application.
You will need to provide your GCSE maths and English Certificates, and your Degree Certificate if you have completed your degree. We request evidence of entry qualifications at interview. If you’re not able to provide them at the time, you may need to apply for replacement copies once you’ve confirmed your place on the course.
Please note: If you do not hold a Grade 4/C or higher in GCSE Maths and English, then you will need to enrol on a course to gain these qualifications, or take an equivalency test via one of our preferred providers. We suggest: https://www.equivalencytesting.com/
Functional skills tests (Pass at level 2) are not regarded as GCSE equivalents as defined in the ITT Compliance criteria, so equivalency tests passed to grade 4/C or higher in English and Maths and Science will be required, in lieu of GCSE achievement at Grade 4/C or higher in each subject.
If you have qualifications achieved abroad, you will need to contact UK NARIC and obtain a comparison statement to prove that your qualification is the equivalent of UK qualifications https://www.ecctis.com/
The Application Process
Cornwall SCITT will have 40 days from the date of submission to make a deliberation on your application, including an interview for those who meet our pre-interview requirements.
Make sure that when you apply, you have relative availability to attend a face-to-face interview within this time-frame.
Cornwall SCITT will be expected to assure your fundamental English and Mathematics skills by the end of the course and may measure your current ability as part of the interview. You may wish to revise basic tables and graphs.
Interview Structure
Our interviews take place online, at Truro College or in our partnership schools.
You will be asked to complete two pre-interview tasks:
- a subject knowledge audit, allowing you to self-assess your current depth of subject knowledge
- A written task
Full details will be provided with your invitation to interview.
At interview you will be asked to:
- deliver a short micro-teach exercise to an interview panel (ideally treating the panel as learners in your classroom)
- take part in a discussion with the panel surrounding your subject knowledge, reasons for wanting to go into teaching and experiences that have prepared you for undertaking a teacher training programme
You may also be asked to take part in a classroom observation exercise, involving interacting with young learners within a supportive role in the classroom.
