Training tomorrow's teachers, today

Courses

We offer three course options

Primary (5-11 Years)

Cornwall SCITT: 2WTB

The Primary course is a one year full-time course, which runs from September through to July, leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Trainees also complete a Level 7 Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) alongside QTS. The course covers the age range 5 to 11 years although trainees also spend a short time in an EYFS class.

Trainees are assigned a trained school based trainer within each school that they are placed. This person is responsible for supporting and guiding the trainee’s professional development and ensuring that they have the opportunities that they need within the school.

A trainee’s progress is assessed through regular formal and informal monitoring of teaching and written work.

Training in school progresses from observing and working alongside an experienced teacher to taking full responsibility, firstly for groups, and later for the whole class during the academic year. The course will produce qualified teachers who are competent and reflective across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

School and Employment Based Pathways (5-11 Years)

School Based (tuition fee) – this route is best suited for applicants who have a connection with a local school, who will be willing to host them for 1 or 2 of their teaching practices. Funding is through a student loan or self-finance.

Our Lead Partners for 2024-25 are:

Aspire Academy Trust (5-11 years)

The Roseland Academy Trust (5 -11 years)

Employment Based (Post-Graduate Teacher Apprenticeship) – this route is only suited for applicants who have work experience of at least 3 years with a local school. The school would need to employ the trainee as an unqualified teacher during the training year.

Candidates are expected to seek an employing school prior to application as we do not find this for you. The course fees are therefore payable by the candidate, or employing school upon agreement.

This is a fifteen-month course leading to Qualified Teacher Status.

Please note, there is currently no option to study for the PGCE if you choose this pathway.

As you are an employee of the school, you may have responsibility for a whole class during the academic year, as well as additional duties expected of an unqualified teacher. You will spend one a day a week off the job (20%) to undertake a personalised training plan with SCITT as part of meeting the Apprenticeship Standard that leads to QTS.
